Course Description
Microbiology studies those organisms that can only be seen under the microscope and includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. This course will survey the diversity of these microorganisms, however, the emphasis will be on bacteria and viruses. We will also consider the effects of microbial infection on human health. Topics on immunology, microbe-human interactions and evolutionary relationships among microbes will be explored. We will also cover topics at the cutting edge of research in microbiology including molecular biology and microbial genomics.

Student Outcomes
After taking this class, students will be able to: • acquire skill in laboratory techniques for safely culturing, observing and identifying microbes • illustrate biological principles within a microbiological context • explain the fundamental differences between bacteria and human cells • assess the roles of microbes in issues of public health and personal welfare • describe metabolic pathways unique to bacteria and how they impact growth
