Course Description
This course will be a study of form, function, and incredible diversity of microorganisms, including an introduction to viruses. Microbiology comprises those organisms that can only be seen under the microscope and includes bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and protozoa. There might not be a lot of microbiology in your prior courses, or a little microbiology in your background. Thus, there is a great deal of microbial terrain to cover. During this course, we will emphasize bacteria, culturing and control of bacterial growth, antimicrobial resistance, immunologic processes, general laboratory techniques with intro to Polymerase CRISPR-Cas9.

Student Outcomes
By participating in this course, you would be better able to: • acquire skill in laboratory techniques for safely culturing, observing and identifying microbes • illustrate biological principles within a microbiological context • explain the fundamental differences between bacteria and human cells • assess the roles of microbes in issues of public health and personal welfare • describe metabolic pathways unique to bacteria and how they impact growth
