Course Description
During the successful undertaking of private composition study, students, with instructor support, will compose and prepare the score and parts (if relevant) for a level-appropriate number of original works. The number, instrumentation and scope of these projects are to be mutually determined by instructor and student. Learning Goals • Identify and articulate strengths, weaknesses, knowledge gaps, and personal tendencies of your compositional work • Reinforce strengths and improve weaknesses and knowledge gaps through specific, individualized composition/analysis projects • Gain skills and experience with aspects of composition that are new to you • Refine and/or expand your understanding of your personal stylistic/aesthetic tastes and tendencies • Articulate composition-related professional goals and take concrete steps toward those goals

Student Outcomes
At the end of an 8-semester sequence of composition lessons, students will be able to: • Conceptualize, compose, revise, and notate original music in a range of styles and genres • Orchestrate for small and large acoustic ensembles • Produce professional-quality scores and parts using notation appropriate for a given project • Manage long-term composition projects independently • Work well with performers and other co-creators in collaborative settings • Communicate their compositional goals and practices orally and in writing • Situate their work in the context of 20th- and 21st-century music via familiarity with a breadth of contemporary music creation practices
