Course Description

Students will meet weekly with instructor in a private lesson context. At each lesson, you will receive an assignment for the following week. You must prepare the assignment for the following week. Students are responsible for purchasing music to be performed in lessons.

Student Outcomes

1) Students will be able to demonstrate proper fundamental technique on trombone/ euphonium (sound production, lip slurs, articulation, flexibility). 2) Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to perform music of differing styles (lyric, technical) from different time periods and different geographical areas. 3) Students will be able to explain their knowledge of how sound is produced on a brass instrument, will understand how to make a beautiful sound on their own instrument- trombone or euphonium, and be familiar with the basic equation for brass instruments: Wind + vibration = Sound 4) Students will be able to demonstrate artistic expression through musicianship, technical expertise and skill. Weekly assignments will include foundational work (scales, arpeggios, lip slurs), etude work (lyric and technical) and solo work. -A particular focus for the 2024-2025 school year, will be guiding each student on all major scales and arpeggios in all 12 keys. Fluency in these patterns will equate to being more fluent in executing your music! Each student will receive a scale and arpeggio sheet. We will be incorporating them into each lesson. Also, understanding key signatures and tonal centers, will be evaluated, and/or taught/reviewed. I want you to know what key a piece of music is in and be able to identify that quickly. This will make playing new music as comfortable as possible. 5) Students will be able to create historically and culturally appropriate interpretations through the performance of varied repertoire in solo performance.
