Course Description

This course is an introduction to basic concepts in chemistry in the context of organic chemistry. Organic chemistry is the chemistry of compounds containing carbon. While organic compounds are made from fewer than ten of the more than 100 elements in the periodic table, they make up all living organisms and thousands of other compounds like drugs we use to cure diseases and plastics we use for just about everything. It may seem that limiting ourselves to the study of just a few elements might not be very instructive. Nothing could be further from the truth! The chemistry of carbon compounds is complex and interesting. It has captivated the attention of chemists for well over a hundred years. We hope you will find it interesting as well.

Student Outcomes

We will work toward the following outcomes so that students in this course: 1. ...will be able to develop and execute actionable, quantitative approaches to problems and projects of a chemical or biochemical nature, drawing both from fundamental content knowledge and an understanding of how science is done. 2. ...will be able to critically evaluate the scientific evidence supporting an argument. 3. ...will be an effective communicator of chemical concepts and appreciate the various ways you can use your chemical knowledge to make positive contributions to society. 4. ...will have developed positive life skills and habits from your coursework, co-curricular and research experiences. 5. …will have an appreciation for the contributions of others and be adept at working within a diverse group of scientists.
