Course Description

You have learned a great deal during your studies at DePauw, so we are at a point where you can take the time to think about why and how scientists know the things you have been taught. Yes, our disciplinary focus will be biophysical chemistry, but our learning goals are much more idealistic than having you restate or even apply basic facts of biophysics. Our goal is not just to have you perform well on exams, but to help you develop a newfound confidence in your ability to learn, to challenge ideas, to evaluate scientific theories and facts.

Student Outcomes

This course is concerned with developing your ability to engage in biophysical thinking. Our course material will focus on practical thermodynamics, quantum, and kinetics as they are employed in biochemistry. Because biophysical chemistry is such a large, encompassing field it would be impossible, but more importantly, not valuable to cover all aspects of biophysics. It is infinitely more important to understand how to think critically about biophysical studies and to have the confidence to tackle thinking about such studies. THROUGH YOUR WORK IN THIS COURSE, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO*: a) analyze and evaluate scientific evidence in a logical, precise manner b) communicate biochemical concepts with precision and clarity, conveying the logical progression of your ideas c) listen closely to the contributions of others as they articulate scientific thoughts, and formulate reasonable questions and responses to them d) develop realistic experimental methods to explore a problem or hypothesis of a biochemical nature.
