Course Description

Design is ubiquitous in our day-to-day lives. It affects all people as it intersects with social, political, environmental, and cultural implications. Design can be utilized in many fields of study: you can design a political campaign, an exhibition, everyday objects, user interfaces, video games, utilize design in engineering and hardware, architecture, landscaping, city planning, and, of course, fine arts. This course sets out to enhance students’ understanding of conceptual contemporary design and propose it as a critical, socially engaged medium that incorporates new technologies, theories, and techniques as catalyst for future landscapes. In this material-based course, students will continue with and expand on the ideas from Intro to Design Studies. Students will utilize design principles and theory in the creation of a portfolio of work that includes 2D, 3D, and 4D work made through a narrative studio journey through the past, present, and future of creative applications. This is a studio-intensive course. Individual reviews and communal class critiques will form the basis of this class. Through close observation, group discussion, research of historical objects, and analysis of existing design solutions, students will offer new, visually engaging solutions in the construction of their own design portfolios. Additionally, this studio course teaches students how to use typography, print design, and illustration to create meaning and messaging. Through hands-on experience with physical material, students create digitized and analog workflows resulting in a portfolio of design projects. This course will demonstrate how effective design has impacted/influenced social and political movements; and help students' design practice from a place of individual meaning as well as communities of shared values.
