Course Description
Design Studies is a broad field, informed by and seen throughout our day-to-day lives. It is the art of the everyday and exists as a form of intellectual exchange dependent on social use of space and object: the built environment. It affects all people as it intersects with social, political, environmental, and cultural implications. Whether physical or digital design asks how people react and respond. It asks what is needed and what can be improved, with attention to visual aesthetics. By using basic design principles and theory alongside project-specific research, students will learn to effectively communicate their ideas. Good design, as well as good art or any successful problem-solving, takes context into consideration. Context is inevitable: the world around us. In this material-based course, students will learn how to control shape, value, space, form, and visual relationship to create effective design and communication. Projects focus on design and problem solving process and result in a portfolio of studies and completed works. This course introduces students to histories and theories of design, and positions students to develop as designers in various fields. With close observation, group discussion, research of historical objects, and analysis of existing design solutions, students will offer new, visually engaging solutions in the construction of their own design portfolios.
