Course Description
HISP 131 is an the first of a two course beginning Spanish course at DePauw. It is an overview of elementary Spanish grammar, speaking, reading, writing and Hispanic cultures, for those students who have no prior experience in Spanish (and therefore did not take a placement exam), or who have less than 2.5 semesters of high school Spanish and were directed to this course via placement examination. This course is NOT AVAILABLE to students whose placement scores directed them to a higher level.. The course is taught with a communicative approach to teaching and learning Spanish. It is especially designed to give students a reasonable mastery of listening comprehension and speaking skills, and an introduction to writing in a second language. Students attend to these goals in a context where they gain a better understanding of the Spanish-speaking world and its most pressing issues. The course may count towards a major or a minor in Spanish. Successful completion of the course fulfills one of the two required semesters of a language for students. The class is open only to students who are placed into this level by test results or departmental direction.
