Peer into your mother's bedroon after you've made a joke at her expense and suffer the independence of her breath. The mystery is there, where your father used to lie. In the cool clefts of sheets beneath her quiet body. Look at her. Turn your head, step to the side. Just look at her spotting skin. And, if you still haven't found what you're looking for: shift, shift.
