Letter From the Editor

The theme of this semester’s publication is a question that we ask ourselves too sincerely, others too rhetorically, and our writers perhaps a bit too curiously: Who do you think you are?

Our Editor-in-Chief Rachel Higson and I created this theme not as a limitation to the content that we ultimately chose, but as an exploration of how writing and art are self-reflective. In one way, the theme asked our writers to find themselves in the works: they create fictional stories and paint fantastical beasts, but every creation bears the subtle, tangible mark of its creator—every dish a cook, every watch a watchmaker. In another way, the theme dares our writers to question their identity, to challenge it, or even to reaffirm it in spite of those that stand in their way.

We ask our readers to explore these works with an open mind, al- ways ready to see the author’s signature hiding between lines of prose or in between an enjambment—you may even find yourself obscured in a painting or a closing stanza. In Ulysses^ Joyce echoes this sentiment: “Every life is in many days, day after day. We walk through ourselves, meeting robbers, ghosts, giants, old men, young men, wives, wid- lows, brothers-in-Iove, but always meeting ourselves.”
