Course Description

The purpose of this class is to gain an understanding of the field of conservation biology from both a theoretical and an applied standpoint. We seek to understand the science behind conservation biology as well as the real-world issues from economic, sociological and ethical perspectives. We will in large part use our textbook as our outline for the class, reading each chapter and discussing and clarifying difficult points and concepts. We’ll augment this with scientific papers and articles.

Student Outcomes

Our student outcome goals for the course are that each student in the class should be able to:

  • interpret scientific research relating to the maintenance of biological diversity.
  • explain the biological, socioeconomic and ethical considerations that must be made in any conservation program.
  • describe a range of concepts that are critical to the practice of conservation biology.
  • express themselves effectively in various forms of biological scientific writing.
