Course Description

This course employs a keyword strategy to introduce students to the interdisciplinary field of media studies. Throughout the semester, we consider media in its myriad forms – from advertising and celebrity culture to television and social media. Integrating traditional teaching methods with new approaches to student-centered learning, the class encourages students to interrogate the decisive role media and popular culture play in everyday lived experience. Course assignments reflect a pedagogical concern for developing students’ capacity for critical thinking, creative problem solving, and collaborative work practices. Specifically, the following questions motivate our efforts this semester: 1. What is the relevance of critical media studies in the context of a 21st century liberal arts education? 2. How, and to what ends, have key concepts in media studies developed over time? 3. How can a keyword strategy inform our study of the relationship between media, society & culture? 4. How can we leverage digital technologies to explore key issues and debates in media studies?
