Course Description

This course is open to all students who wish to develop a deeper love and understanding of music. The course introduces concepts and terms of music studies and teaches the skills to listen more deeply and to write and speak fluently about music. The course explores some of the historical and cultural factors that have influenced musical creation and performance and the roles that music has played in social life past and present. No previous musical experience or ability to read music notation is required. No prerequisites.

Student Outcomes

By the end of this course the successful student will be able to: • understand and discuss the history and development of various musical styles in the United States (c. 1600s–2000s) • integrate critical listening skills with critical thinking and intellectual inquiry through various course assignments, examinations, and short papers. • discern major trends that have affected musical development during this time including technology, economics and business, politics and systemic racism, and developments within particular genres (folk, concert music, musical theatre…).
