Course Description

This course is overall unlike many biology and science courses you will take at DePauw. Rather than acquainting you with a branch of science and the processes scientists follow, Biodiversity (as I am teaching it) is a class in scientific vocabulary. My goal is to get you familiar, at least at a superficial level, with the myriad forms of life on the planet. Memorization, observation, and organization of facts are key skills for this course! We will use a phylogenetic framework for organizing the information, but really, it’s a lot of memorization

Student Outcomes

A successful student in this course should be able to: A. Interpret evolutionary relationships (phylogenies) among major taxa B. Be able to identify organisms to major taxonomic groupings, especially common local organisms C. Be able to reconstruct the evolutionary history of major adaptations
